Adventurous Activity Authorisation - The Permit Scheme

Andrew Jones

Andrew Jones

Assistant County Commissioner (Activities)

The “Permit Scheme” replaces the old authorisation scheme

The Permit Scheme should now be fully implemented

Andrew Jones | activities@glne-scouts.org.uk

Summary of the advantages of the Permit Scheme:

  • Applicants may apply directly to Approved Assessors for assessments rather than chase around for signatures of approval at this stage.
  • Formal training, although recommended, is not compulsory since it is recognized that people can gain skills and experience from a number of sources. Training does not imply competence.
  • Introduction of the term Approved Assessor and the requirement that they keep up to date and have the 'soft skills' required to assess effectively.
  • Introduction of the term `Permit' to enforce the fact that there is a proper process of assessment, rather than casual authorizations.
  • Permits are recorded on the Membership Services Database.
  • Need for first aid cover applies to the activity not to the person's Permit.
  • Air activities removed from the list of adventurous activities due to external legislation required.
  • The granting of a Permit still rests with the responsible Commissioner. We have set out the steps that they should take.

Work will be undertaken shortly on Scoutbase to publish courses for assessment that will be available within & outside our county. Please do not hesitate contacting Andrew Jones (ACC Activities) or your District Commissioner if you require further information regarding the scheme. If in doubt or unsure about any aspect of the scheme, please ask first.

There is a Power Point presentation available which I am willing to present, if sufficient notice is given.

There are two fact sheets available on Scoutbase detailing the new scheme and an Applicants Guide namely FS120100 & FS120101.
