Geoff Preston

GLNE Mountaineer Advisor

The weekends are spent in one of the mountain/moor areas of the UK and are dedicated to giving training to participants in the following skills.

  • Navigation involving the map and compass
  • Lightweight camping and backpacking
  • Weather appreciation and forecasting
  • Use of the rope for security and confidence (Not involving climbing)
  • River crossing
  • Group management
  • Access and Conservation
  • Walking skills
  • Personal equipment

Not all of the above items will necessarily be experienced on one particular weekend, but all will be covered over a period. Particular skills can be included in a weekend if the team leader is informed beforehand.

The weekend starts with participants travelling to the area during Friday afternoon/evening sharing vehicles. Tentage and food is shared or individual, supplied by participants, as preferred. Camp site is arranged by organizer and paid for by participants. All day Saturday and Sunday morning is spent on the stated skills. Return to home area is usually around 6pm on the Sunday.

There is a pre-meet on the Monday before a weekend to discuss skills, car sharing, camping and relative issues.

If you want more details or clarification of any of the points above please contact me, Geoff Preston.
