Assistant County Commissioner (Activities)

We cannot all be qualified to do everything but there is always someone who can. Surveys have proved that our members are constantly seeking to do many various activities from the adventurous and creative to traditional and different. Have you thought about SCUBA diving, Gang Shows, Climbing or Paragliding? The range is endless something to suit every requirement. A directory is currently being put together of those people who can assist with or organise activities for you.

Mountaineering

Mountaineering

Pushing High

These pictures are from a Navigation Weekend organised by Geoff Preston of the County Mountaineering team.

The idea is for leaders and Ventures to improve their navigation skills and attain a National Navigation Award. The County mountaineering team are a registered operator of the award.

Mountaineering

These are from a summer camp last year in Kandersteg Switzerland. Most of the older ventures and leaders had been for a GLNE winter walking week in Scotland the winter before where they had learnt how to use crampons.

Mountaineering

All these photographs were taken by Mark Hutton from 3rd.Gidea Park Scout Group. Many thanks to him and the Ventures and leaders shown in these photos.

Rock Climbing

Rock Climbing

Trust & Adventure

Before our scout leaders are allowed to take Scouts climbing they have to be extensively instructed and assessed on how to safely set up and run climbing sessions. The Greater London North East Mountaineering Team (Mountainwide) run different courses for leaders, Explorers and for Scouts.

Rock Climbing

It's surprising how many of our scouts haven't climbed on real rocks before. They regard Hargreaves, Thriftwood and Stubbers' walls as rock climbing. So for some this is something new.

Climbers are practising the technique of abseiling. The Ventures and older scouts are also taught how to belay. This makes it more interesting for them and encourages them to get involved. Hopefully they will eventually be inspired to take up climbing on their own. Most of the time is spent on the rocks but some time is spent in doors practising.

Canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing, rafting and sailing are some of the water activities in which scouts, ventures and leaders participate.

All these canoeing pictures were taken on a summer camp on the Gower peninsula in Wales.

Water Activities

The rafting photos were taken at a place near Bala in Wales. Only people over the age of 14 were allowed to participate in this rafting activity.
