Scrap Heap Challenge 2006
42 Cub Scouts took part in the first ever' Scrap Heap Challenge' at Gilwell Park. Cubs and their 'Technical Experts' were all keen to tackle the project of building a four foot long boat from recycled materials. The 'build' was announced at 2 pm sharp, with all teams planning hard.
At 2:30pm scavenging commenced, with some teams gathering more than would be possible to use! (They would all be responsible for clearing it away at the end) At regular intervals the Cubs were allowed to collect further scrap. A small number of leaders were caught with their hands in their pockets!!! So hastily they were given a sheet of polystyrene and joined the fun. At 3:15 the 'Technical Expert' was removed from the project and the Cubs were allowed to work independently! (much the annoyance of the expert) Eventually the expert returned and with encouragement helped the Cubs a little less! By 4 pm eight boats were proudly displayed and the judging began. It was difficult to mark as each and every boat had its finer points. Including the skirt on one boat and the drapes on another. Eventually a decision was reached but the fun did not stop there. The boats were paraded to the waters edge where in turn they were dragged around the 'bomb hole 'and were awarded points on its floatability!! Amazingly NONE of them sunk and only one CD sank to the bottom lost for ever more.
Further judging by Dean and Charles and what seemed hours later the winning boat 'Yellow Mellow' was awarded first place.
Congratulations Romford District. They sailed away into the distance with the trophy. All those taking part received a certificate and requested the event take place next year, with a few tweaks to the rules.
