Purpose of the Role
To lead and support the delivery of a high quality, consistent, fun, and inclusive programme for all Squirrel Dreys (4–6) and Beaver Colonies (6–8) across GLNE County.
The role focuses on developing, coaching, and inspiring volunteers at District and Group level—ensuring young people across the county enjoy safe, adventurous Scouting that builds early skills for life.
Key Responsibilities
Programme Quality & Support
• Champion highquality Squirrel and Beaver programmes across all Districts in GLNE County.
• Provide guidance, activity ideas, programme templates, and resources to support consistent local delivery.
• Encourage innovation and ensure programmes remain fun, relevant, and accessible for all 4–8-year-olds.
• Monitor programme quality and identify opportunities for improvement, support, or training.
Volunteer Development
• Mentor and support District-level Squirrel and Beaver Leads, as well as Group Section Leaders.
• Facilitate training, induction, and networking opportunities for volunteers working with Squirrel and Beaver Sections
• Build a positive, collaborative county-wide culture across Dreys and Colonies.
• Support volunteer recruitment by promoting the value of Squirrel and Beaver age-range Scouting.
County Events & Activities
• Lead or coordinate county-level events, activity days, early-years experiences, or joint Squirrel–Beaver adventures.
• Support Districts in planning and delivering their own large-scale events, sharing best practice and resources.
• Promote inter-District collaboration and ensure young people benefit from a strong county-wide programme.
Safety, Welfare & Inclusion
• Champion safeguarding, safety, wellbeing, and inclusive practice across the Squirrel and Beaver sections county-wide.
• Ensure District Leads and Section Leaders understand and apply Scouts policies, risk assessments, and procedures.
• Promote inclusive approaches so all young people, regardless of needs, can fully participate.
Communication & Collaboration
• Act as the County’s key point of contact for everything related to Squirrels and Beavers.
• Hold regular catchups with District Leads / representatives to align goals, share challenges, and support their success.
• Provide regular updates to the County Programme Team Leader.
• Contribute to County strategy planning for youth programme enhancement.
Skills & Experience (Helpful, Not Essential)
• Passion for supporting young people aged 4–8 and the volunteers who make it possible.
• Ability to motivate, encourage, and develop others.
• Strong communication, organisation, and relationship-building skills.
• Creativity when developing programme ideas or solving challenges.
• Confidence working across multiple Districts and volunteer teams.
• Willingness to participate in relevant training and learning opportunities.
Time Commitment
• A few hours per month for planning, meetings, communication, and volunteer support (flexible around availability).
• Occasional attendance at County or District events, development days, or training sessions.
• Additional time during large events or key programme initiatives.
