International – Team Leader

Role Purpose

The GLNE International Lead is responsible for coordinating, developing, and overseeing international activities across the county. The role will ensure that programmes are safe, compliant, and accessible, so more young people and adult volunteers safely experience high‑quality international Scouting—locally, nationally and abroad.

You’ll develop a pipeline of opportunities (exchanges, camps, Jamborees, partnerships), ensuring all activities align with the policies and standards of The Scout Association (UK).

Key Outcomes / Success Measures

  • More young people in GLNE participate in international experiences each year.
  • Sections and Explorer Units feel confident to plan and deliver visits abroad.
  • All international activities comply with safety, safeguarding and visits‑abroad requirements.
  • A capable, motivated GLNE International Team is recruited, supported and retained.
  • GLNE is connected to UK‑wide and global Scouting opportunities and events.
  • Positive feedback from young people and leaders.

Time Commitment

  • Additional time during major camps or activity programmes.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy & Planning

  • Create and deliver the GLNE International Plan (12–24 months), with clear targets, calendar, and budget proposals.
  • Identify and promote a balanced portfolio: international activity at home (e.g., culture nights, JOTI/JOTA), UK‑hosted international events, and visits abroad (sections, Explorers, Network).
  • Develop partnerships (e.g., European/National Scout Organisations, twinned Groups/Districts, NGOs, cultural bodies) that open sustainable opportunities.

Programme, Quality & Inclusion

  • Provide guidance to Section Leaders/Explorers/Network on integrating internationalism into the programme (badges, top awards, King’s Scout Award/International aspects).
  • Curate ready‑to‑run resources and workshop kits for sections (e.g., culture packs, global goals activities, climate & community action).
  • Ensure activities are inclusive and affordable, with clear financial planning, fundraising toolkits, and hardship support processes.

Visits Abroad & Compliance

  • Lead the GLNE process for Visits Abroad (advice, approval routing, timelines).
  • Champion risk assessments, safety, safeguarding, insurance, medical/travel documentation, and emergency plans, ensuring leaders are supported and confident.
  • Maintain a light‑touch tracking/log of proposed and approved international trips for visibility, support and learning.

Partnerships & Representation

  • Act as GLNE liaison with the UK Scouts International Office/Advisers, neighbouring Counties, and relevant external partners.
  • Share GLNE learning, represent at regional/national networks, and cascade updates to local volunteers.

Communications & Engagement

  • Keep volunteers informed via County comms strategy
  • Showcase impact through stories, case studies and young people’s voices.
  • Run information evenings and practical clinics (e.g., ‘Visits Abroad 101’, fundraising, travel logistics, passports/visas).

Events & Logistics

  • Oversee planning and delivery for key events (county contingents, hosting international contingents, international sub‑camps).
  • Support logistics frameworks (transport, accommodation, catering, safeguarding, emergency contacts, documentation).

Governance, Risk & Learning

  • Ensure adherence to Scouts policies (Safety, Safeguarding, Inclusion & Diversity, Data Protection, Expenses) and local GLNE procedures.
  • Maintain risk registers for major trips/events and ensure post‑event reviews and debriefs inform continuous improvement.

  • Skilled in coordinating volunteers and overseeing safe, high‑quality activity delivery.
  • Solid understanding of safety management principles and conducting risk assessments.
  • Experience leading high‑ropes sessions.
  • Capable of managing groups confidently and providing clear, supportive leadership.
  • Able to engage positively with young people and manage large groups effectively.
  • Strong communicator with excellent problem‑solving skills.
  • Calm, safety‑minded approach with a strong commitment to safeguarding.
  • Enthusiastic and motivating, with the ability to build confidence in others.
  • Collaborative team player with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Highly dependable, responsible, and consistent in delivering on commitments.
  • Fully confident working at height and in outdoor environments.

Desirable

  • Experience planning or leading visits abroad or major camps.
  • Knowledge of Scouts UK processes and programme (or willingness to learn).
  • Budgeting/fundraising experience.
  • Intercultural competence and ability to build international relationships.
